How to play

  1. Press Start and watch the tiles light up, one at a time.
  2. When it says "Your turn", tap the same tiles in the same order.
  3. Get it right and the sequence grows by one. A wrong tile costs a life and shows the sequence again. You have three lives.

Levels and scoring

Rounds start with two tiles on a 3 by 3 grid. From six tiles the grid grows to 4 by 4, and the tiles light up a little faster as the sequence gets longer. Your score is the longest sequence you repeat. Your best score is saved in this browser.

Tips for a high score

  • Group the sequence into short chunks of two or three tiles, the way you remember a phone number.
  • Notice the shape the tiles make: a line, a corner, a zigzag.
  • Sit back and keep the whole grid in view instead of following each tile with your eyes.

Take a proper screen break

A round of Visual Memory usually takes two to four minutes. A game is a change of task, but your eyes are still on a screen. After a round, try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds, and blink fully a few times. Our guide to the 20-20-20 rule explains where it comes from and what a 2022 study found, and screen eye strain: what actually helps covers screen setup, dry air and when to get your eyes checked.

Questions about Visual Memory

Is Visual Memory free?

Yes. It's free to play as often as you like in any browser, with no download.

Is this a memory test or a brain training programme?

No. It's a game for fun and screen breaks. A score depends on focus, tiredness, screen size and practice, and it says nothing about your memory or your eyes. If you're worried about your memory or your vision, talk to a doctor.

How is the score counted?

Your score is the longest sequence you repeat correctly. You start with two tiles, each correct round adds one, and after six tiles the grid grows from 3 by 3 to 4 by 4. You have three lives.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. On the 3 by 3 grid, the number keys 1 to 9 match the tiles like a phone keypad. Tab and Enter work on any grid. Press P or Escape to pause, and F for full screen.
